Esther comes from a family of 4 members in a place called Katoogo slum. Katoogo slum is a place located near the shores of Lake Victoria in Gaba. She stays with her aunt who has raised her since she was one year old, Esther’s mother got a mental illness when she was pregnant with Esther until when she gave birth. She would ran mad occasionally, the aunt haven’t told Esther who her real mom is because she feels Esther will be devastated. she thinks her aunt is her real mom. Her father wasn’t known and they think her mom was raped. It’s the aunt that struggles to help the family through roasting fish. Her aunt’s wooden house is flooded with swampy water and they had to make a wooden bridge to create way to their home and during rainy season, Esther and her family are at risk of snakes, mosquitoes that are harmful to their lives and health. Esther would also desire to stay in a better place but her parents’ income can’t afford. Thanks to a neighbor who Painted a smile on Esther’s face and connected her parents to fountain of Hope learning center to help Esther have a chance to go to school.
