Muhindu Eliza’s Story

Katogo slum is residence to a number of children. On an average, there exist approximately 1000 children some orphans, some groomed by single parents while others by both parents, this place is characterized with poverty. With such a large number of children, it is so surprising on how even with the limited land; all these people manage to reside in just that one place, this swampy place is always flooded in rainy season forcing people to run away from their homes because they also flood and with the flooding comes with a number of reptiles which are dangerous to human life and since the water is dirty, it is associated with a number of diseases like diarrhea , foot diseases and many others.

Muhindu Eliza, at the age of 20 is a mother of two (2) alongside her husband Maseleka Moses aged 23 years who have been able to persist in taking care of her children. She is a Congolese from the bakonjo tribe who has settled in this miserable area.

This young family live in a single roomed house made of timber located in the heart of Katogo region. Just like many other families, floods have made their stay at Katogo unbearable, they cannot afford to rent a good house because even their income is very little to sustain the entire family so life is very challenging.

 

Eliza is part of the sewing and hair plaiting project in our ministry, this is what she has been doing ever since for her family’s well being, as a side job. She has been trained on how to effectively save and from this she has learned to save money to pay for her children’s school fees. Her husband has also put in a helping hand, even when he doesn’t earn that much.

 

Her hope of starting up a saloon has been risen and awaken due to this new skill she obtained from our skills development program however expensive it seems. She is so determined, and she speaks with passion and courage when she says that nothing can stop her dreams from coming true.
